Pineapple tomato - Solanum lycopersicum

Pineapple tomato / Solanum lycopersicum

Special features and/or general description of the variety:

The pineapple tomato is a large, fleshy tomato variety with a sweet, fruity taste and a light pineapple aroma.
The pineapple tomato is probably native to Kentucky in the USA, from where it was brought to Europe around 1950. Since then, it has become a true classic in our home gardens. Pineapple tomatoes are beefsteak tomatoes, the largest of the tomato fruits. The fruit vegetable is flat-round, i.e. wider than tall, and slightly ribbed. Pineapple tomatoes ripen from the beginning of August and therefore belong to the late ripening tomato varieties.

Sowing:
from mid-March to early April

Sowing instructions:
for germination in a sunny place at approx. 20 C, then place in a slightly cooler place and prick out when the first 2 leaves have formed (approx. 14 days).

If thetemperature is above 10C , the young plants can also be taken outside during the day, but initially only in the shade so that they can slowly get used to the light conditions.
However, the light conditions outside are much better for the plants than indoors, making them very stable.

Location:
Pineapple tomatoes love warmth and are therefore best suited to the greenhouse. They are sometimes regarded as the mimosa of tomato varieties, as they bear few fruits without sufficient protection and warmth. Pineapple tomatoes are best grown as single shoots and the stingy shoots in the leaf axils are consistently removed. In the greenhouse, the plants reach an average height of 1.60 to 1.80 meters and therefore require support. Experience has shown that pineapple tomatoes are less suitable for outdoor cultivation, as they are not as disease-resistant as outdoor varieties. They should at least be protected from the rain or placed in a pot in a sheltered spot on a south-facing wall.
